Responsibilities

Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Medical Director, Director of Imaging Services and Director of Patient Care Services, the RN – Radiation Oncology is responsible for the delivery of excellence in patient care through performing patient assessment for all population age-specific patients to receive diagnostic testing or therapy. Requires critical patient care and assessment skills as well as the development of technical proficiency. Responsible for planning and implementing interventions and goals, and evaluating patient care outcomes. Exercises independent judgment and decision making within the limitations and scope of practice. Provides patient orientation, procedure explanation, and pre and post diagnostic care to completion of test. Assists patients with basic patient care needs. Responsible for proper maintenance of equipment, accreditation, and Departmental Performance Improvement. Displays professional, safe conduct in all interactions. Maintains positive working relationships with staff, other departments, physicians and peers. Displays conduct in support of CHI St. Luke’s Health Memorial Mission & Vision.

  12. Correlates the clinical history with the diagnostic study to be performed.
  13. Consults with the referring physician regarding the patient’s previous history and decision of appropriate procedures required. 
  14. Provides patient orientation, procedure explanation, and pre and post care to completion of test.
  15. Operates technical diagnostic and therapeutic equipment in performing a variety of Radiation Oncology specialty areas.
  16. Assists patients with basic and specific patient care needs.
  17. Provides emergency care, notifying appropriate personnel and ensures that patient safety is not jeopardized.
  18. Prepares equipment ensuring that equipment is operational, safe and functioning according to safety standards.
  19. Problem solves equipment failure and contacts service representative regarding equipment problems.
  20. Ensures that daily equipment and room maintenance is performed during after each procedure, and that special precautions and measures are performed to ensure infection control standards.
  21. Completes all quality checks and ensures that equipment logs are maintained.
  22. Completes all clinical supply inventories, ensuring that each exam room is complete with the necessary supplies required to perform the procedure.
  23. Actively participates with patient testing, performing routine, non-routine, urgent, and emergent patient requests.
  24. Initiates nursing interventions and physician orders, recording all patient data accurately.
  25. Proficient at starting IV’s and administering medications; displays competence in dosage calculations, drug interactions, implications, precautions, and complications for all medications administered. 
  26. Assists the physician during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to promote optimal patient outcomes.
  27. Monitors level of supplies and drugs within the department. 
  28. Proficient in defibrillation, cardioversion, and emergency medication administration.
  29. Displays quality patient assessment skills, based on age-specific and patient population specific needs, and notifies nurse or physician as patient condition warrants. 
  30. Competent in interpretation of lab values and correlate with diagnosis to determine potential implications and complications. 
  31. Manages follow-up care for patient and communicates follow-up care plan to patient and patient’s family members.
  32. Consistently enters correct exam information in computer system.
  33. Coordinates the timely and accurate completion of the Patient Assessment Instrument (PAI) for each patient following assessment/procedure. Collects the clinical data from the medical record, enters the data onto the PAI, and electronically transmits the data to CMS for reimbursement as necessary. Verifies coding accuracy with the Medical Director and coordinator.
  34. Regularly practices aseptic techniques and utilizes Universal Precautions.
  35. Maintains proficiency in all areas of the department, including but not limited to ancillary areas and provides support as needed. 
  36. Demonstrates tact and professionalism in working and communicating with patients/families, physicians and other employees of the healthcare system.
  37. As a member of the radiation oncology department, ensures that the patient/family is satisfied with the services provided, any issue that arises is addressed and resolved promptly. 
  38. Provides the requesting physician with preliminary findings based on criteria established for each procedure.
  39. Complies with and develops efficient and creative ways to maintain departmental productivity standards.
  40. Adheres to CHI St. Luke’s Health Memorial policies, including but not limited to “CHI Values & Ethics at Work”, HIPPA, PHI, ePHI, Privacy Rule, and confidentiality. 
  41. Maintains safe work habits; adheres to safety rules; immediately reports any unsafe condition; immediately reports any incident / injury.
  42. Supports department-based goals and contributes to the success of the organization.  
  43. Complies with hospital policies and procedures; attends required in – services, education and training.
  44. Accountable for maintaining required certifications.  
  45. Performs duties in accordance with that of hospital policies and procedures, and regulatory agency guidelines. 
  46. Demonstrates a willingness to follow the chain of command, regularly channels suggestions, criticisms and complaints to the appropriate person.
  47. Supports department-based goals and contributes to the success of the organization.
  48. Serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff. 
  49. Wears identification badge and clocks in appropriately.
  50. Rotates weekend/call responsibilities in a professional and accountable fashion if applicable. 
  51. Performs other duties as assigned.



   
   

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Education Level

Required: 

Associate’s Degree in Nursing or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing

Licensure/Certification

Required: 

Registered Nurse with valid Texas license & 

BLS certification (through an approved AHA program)
