POSITION SUMMARY: Administers care to patient population which ranges from neonates to geriatrics. Works cooperatively and interdependently with emergency, prehospital, law enforcement, and ancillary personnel while coordinating the emergent and critical care of patients requiring helicopter transportation. Markets the Air 1 program and serves as a representative of the department as well as the UT Health East Texas System when involved with a public relations activity and/or marketing activity. Understands and supports the UT Health East Texas Mission, Vision, And Values. Adheres to all hospital policies and procedures. DUTIES, ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: Assesses patient needs in prehospital and hospital settings utilizing accepted paramedic standards. Sets priorities of care rapidly and accurately under all conditions and in varied environments, whether inside a hospital or in the field. Functions in the field without direct supervision utilizing assessment skills and Air 1 written protocols when physician contact is not possible and accepts responsibility for such actions. Maintains and is proficient in the use of all supplies and equipment used for patient care on the helicopter, including communication and navigation equipment. Additionally, is proficient in the use of common supplies and equipment found in ambulances, emergency, and critical units. Participates in public/community relations and education assignments which may include speaking to groups. Maintains helicopter equipment and supplies at standard par levels and orders when necessary. Assures helicopter is always in mission-ready status. Participates in departmental CQI and educational activities, including attendance at Air One staff meetings. QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS: Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Certificate from an accredited EMT/Paramedic program. Experience: At least three years prehospital experience in a lead paramedic role. Previous flight paramedic experience is preferred. Certification and Licensure: Texas EMT-P certification required. National Registry EMT-P (NREMT-P) required. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) required. Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS) required. Certified Flight Paramedic Credential (FP-C) within 6 months of employment. If the Crew member is an RN working in the Paramedic role the CFRN will take the place of the required Certification. PALS required. NRP required ACLS required Skills The ability to operate critical care equipment (i.e., monitors, pumps, ventilators) Must possess standard critical care skills commensurate with the flight nursing profession. Must become proficient in the operation of VHF and 800 System radio equipment. Must become proficient in the use of the Global Positioning System. The ability to make major and critical decisions in the absence of medical and/or supervisory direction. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must conform to height and weight requirements for the Air 1 helicopters as well as maintaining weight within these requirements. Excellent physical and cardiovascular health as determined by an approved Air 1 physician
