DUTIES, ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

* Communicates within and across departments to ensure information is shared for effective operations.
* Functions as a centralized resource manager to all departments within Surgical Services.
* Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to direct and supervise multi-departmental staff members delivering care.
* Oversees and/or teaches others specialized knowledge and skills necessary to perform techniques and routines in area of specialty; acts as a preceptor and resource for department processes.
* Provides operational management of daily patient care services to assure high levels of patient satisfaction. Assists in the management of financial, capital, and human resources directed by the department managers and directors.
* Assesses, monitors, and evaluates systems for delivery of care. Leads/participates in departmental performance improvement activities and integration of services.
* Assists in development of patient care standards of practice and personnel performance. Ensures services meet established nursing and surgical standards of care and quality standards.
* Supervises nursing staff and/or other non-licensed medical or support personnel. Responsible for assisting in performance evaluations and disciplinary actions in coordination with the clinical Managers. Assists to ensure that new employees are oriented and trained appropriately.
* Ability to make tactical decisions around the allocation and direction of the work of supervised employees using established guidelines, policies and /or procedures.
* Communicates regularly with physicians, departmental managers, and directors as required. Communicates with the administrator on-call after normal business hours of surgical services as needed regarding physician issues and/or concerns.
* Other duties as assigned.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Supervisor of Surgical Services is responsible for assisting in the organization and administration of clinical services in the surgical departments in order to ensure competent patient care delivery. They direct and supervise all surgical activities in the absence of the Department Managers. The supervisor assists in coordinating the placement of surgical personnel on all units to ensure safe quality care with maximum utilization of personnel skills. The Supervisor of Surgical Services functions as a resource to all areas of the Surgical Services department and assumes management responsibilities for Surgical Services as required.

QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:

Education:

* High School Diploma, Associates Degree, and Graduate of Accredited Nursing School required
* BSN preferred

Experience:

* One to two years of supervisory and staff management experience required
* Three to five years of progressive management experience supervising and managing staff preferred
* Must have excellent communication skills including clear and concise written, verbal and listening skills.

Certification and Licensure:

* Current Texas RN License
* Current BLS

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

* Requires the physical demands of standing, bending, lifting or performing other work requiring light physical exertion in addition to frequent walking and digital dexterity.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

* Exposure to communicable diseases and biohazardous materials, danger of infection from contaminated materials, falls on slippery floors; possibility of injury from moving heavy equipment or patients.
* OSHA category 1 position. Body substance isolation must be practiced.
