Job Summary The Lead Engineer for Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is a core member of the IAQ Product Growth Team (PGT) and must have the technical expertise to develop and execute product designs for residential applications. This engineer will have a good working knowledge of IAQ regulatory standards and new and emerging IAQ technologies. Other responsibilities include supervising validation testing, driving to root cause for quality and reliability issues, and coaching and mentoring other engineers. Essential Skills or Knowledge

  • Understanding of basic control methods for airborne pathogens such as bacteria and viruses including source control, dilution, filtration, and deactivation
  • Working knowledge of various indoor air quality standards including ASHRAE Standards 52.2 and 62.2 and AHRI Standard 680
  • Knowledge of basic principles of thermal comfort conditions and their interactions with indoor air quality
  • Basic understanding of HVAC system functions and control systems
    • Develop laboratory test plans and analyze test data, including use of Six Sigma tools and statistical analysis techniques and applying Design for Reliability (DFR) principles
    • Must have excellent verbal and written communications skills Product Development
      • Demonstrated ability to take a product/service from ideation through product development and launch.
      • Collaborate across Product Growth Teams (PGTs) to define the product requirements and roadmap for IAQ equipment automation and digital connectivity
      • Proven critical thinking skills with capability to implement root cause analysis and develop Design Failure Modes and Effects Analyses (DFMEAs) Technology & Thought Leadership
        • Lead commissioned research studies with internal and external labs to deepen IAQ technology understanding in residential applications
        • Entrepreneurial mindset-a self-starter, comfortable working with ambiguities, and demonstrates a bias for action
        • Evaluate a product's technical readiness and technology understanding, then build and execute a plan in coordination with enterprise and strategic business units (SBUs) resources to accelerate product readiness
        • Help spearhead the evolution of indoor air quality products from being viewed as an accessory to an integral part of the system and ecosystem within the home
        • Participate in scan and screen activities to routinely pulse the technology landscape of IAQ, leveraging the ten types of innovation to properly assess opportunities within the residential space External & Internal Partnerships
          • As a core member of the IAQ PGT, actively contribute to the strategy development and execution of the IAQ three-year growth plan
          • Partner with the Enterprise Innovation Team, Networks of Excellence (NOEs), and other SBUs within Trane Technologies to accelerate the study of IAQ technologies and their application to residential environments
          • Stay abreast of technical and academic organizations offering thought leadership in IAQ
          • Remain up-to-date on the evolving policies and standards for IAQ impacting residential products and customers through ASHRAE, CDC, EPA, DOE, local building codes, etc.
          • Participate in shaping residential policies and standards for indoor air quality products through active engagement in the industry's influential committees Qualifications
            • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related technical discipline and at least 7 years of engineering work experience required
            • MS preferred
            • Ability to travel abroad if necessary. Expected travel time - 10%.
